Glue & adhesives

Browse guides by topic and find the next step for your project.

This hub answers one question: will this glue stick to that? It covers super glue, epoxy, polyurethane glue, wood glue, construction adhesive, silicone and caulk.

A glue fails for one of three reasons. It's the wrong glue for the material, the surface wasn't clean, or it didn't get time to cure. Some materials, like silicone and many plastics, are hard for almost any glue to grip. That's why we start with the material, not the brand.

How to pick a guide:

  • Joining two things? Start with what glue works on what. If one part is silicone, read does Gorilla Glue work on silicone and does super glue work on silicone.
  • Not sure what's in the tube? Glue types explained compares the main families.
  • Waiting on a joint? Check the cure-time guides before you load it.
  • Made a mess? Go straight to removing glue.

Each cluster starts with one main guide. The material pages show which glues bond best to each surface.

Safety basics for this job

  • Read the label and the safety data sheet first. Makers must publish an SDS for hazardous products. It lists fumes, skin risks and first aid.
  • Get fresh air moving. Open a window or work outside with solvent glues, contact cement and construction adhesive.
  • Wear gloves and safety glasses. Super glue bonds skin fast, and splashes can reach your eyes. Don't pull bonded skin apart.
  • Don't assume cured glue is food-safe. Only use a glue on dishes or cutting boards if the maker says it's safe for food contact.
