Workshop & compressors

Browse guides by topic and find the next step for your project.

This hub is about the shop itself: the air compressor and the tools that run off it, the bench and storage, and the safety gear you keep by the door. It covers how to size a compressor, how to look after one, and how to set up a space where you can find things.

Most compressor questions are about air supply. Each air tool needs a set flow of air at a set pressure, and the compressor has to keep up. The tank needs care too. Water from the air collects inside it, and manuals say to drain it often.

How to pick a guide:

Hand tools have their own hand tools hub. Sanders and grits are in sanding and finishing.

Safety basics for this job

  • Unplug it and let the air out before any service. Then open the drain. DeWalt's manual says to drain the tank daily, because water rusts it from the inside.
  • Never weld, drill or patch a tank. Campbell Hausfeld warns that any change weakens it and can cause a rupture. Replace a rusted tank.
  • Keep blow-off air low and away from skin. OSHA limits compressed air for cleaning to under 30 psi at work, with a chip guard and eye protection. Never point it at a person.
  • Protect your hearing. OSHA requires a hearing program at work once noise averages 85 decibels over 8 hours. Wear plugs or muffs when the compressor or saws run.
