How often should a generator be serviced? Schedules by type

In this guide
The old rule of thumb was "service it once a year." The real answer is in hours and months, whichever comes first, and the first oil change comes much sooner than most people think. Here are the schedules from the makers' own manuals. For more generator and yard tool guides, start at the outdoor power hub.
Service at a glance
| Task | When (portable) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Check the oil level | Before each use (Honda, Champion, Generac) | Low oil can shut the engine off or wear it out |
| Break-in oil change | 5 to 30 hours, by model | Every maker we checked calls for it |
| Oil change | Every 100 hours, or every 6 to 12 months | Sooner under heavy load or heat |
| Clean the air filter | Every 50 to 200 hours, by model; more in dust | A dirty filter starves the engine |
| Check or replace the spark plug | Every 100 hours to yearly | Worn plugs cause hard starts |
| Clean the spark arrestor | Every 100 hours, or with each oil change | Carbon blocks the exhaust |
| Valve clearance | 100 to 300 hours, or yearly | Usually a dealer job |
| Storage prep | Any time it sits a month or more | Old gas gums up the carburetor |
Schedules by generator
Honda EU2200i (inverter)
Honda's chart says to do each task at the month or hour mark, whichever comes first.
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Check oil and air filter | Each use |
| Change oil | First month or 20 hours, then every 6 months or 100 hours |
| Clean air filter | Every 3 months or 50 hours (more often in dust) |
| Check and adjust spark plug | Every 6 months or 100 hours |
| Replace spark plug | Every year or 200 hours |
| Clean spark arrester | Every 6 months or 100 hours |
| Valve clearance, fuel tank and filter | Every year or 200 hours (dealer) |
| Combustion chamber | After every 300 hours (dealer) |
| Fuel tube | Check every 2 years |
The EU2200i holds only 14 oz (0.44 L) of oil, so a little loss shows up fast on the dipstick. Its plug gap is 0.024 to 0.028 in (0.6 to 0.7 mm). Our feeler gauge guide shows how to check it.
Honda adds that for commercial use, you should log hours to set the right intervals. It also warns that skipping the schedule could lead to failures the warranty won't cover.
Champion 3500W (model 100522)
Champion treats the first 5 hours as break-in. During that time it says to stay at or below 50% of the running watt rating and vary the load. Then change the oil.
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Check oil, clean around the intake and muffler | Every 8 hours or before each use |
| Change oil | After the first 5 hours (break-in) |
| Clean air filter | Every 50 hours or yearly |
| Change oil under heavy load or heat | Every 50 hours or yearly |
| Change oil, clean and adjust plug, clean spark arrestor | Every 100 hours or yearly |
| Valve clearance, fuel tank and filter | Every 100 hours or yearly (skilled owner or service center) |
| Combustion chamber | Every 250 hours |
| Fuel line | Replace every 3 years |
Champion also says synthetic oil is fine after break-in, but it doesn't extend the oil change interval.
Generac portable (GP and XT series)
Generac's support page gives this schedule. It notes that hour intervals only work if you have an hour meter. Without one, use the seasonal intervals in your manual.
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Check oil level | Before each use |
| Break-in (oil change, valve clearance on most models) | 20 to 30 hours, by model |
| Change oil, clean spark arrestor | Every 100 hours or yearly |
| Clean or replace air filters | Every 200 hours or yearly |
| Check valve clearance | Every 300 hours or yearly |
| Replace spark plug | Yearly |
Under heavy load or high heat, Generac says to change the oil monthly. In dusty conditions, check the air filter more often.
Generac home standby (10 to 26 kW, air-cooled)
A standby unit runs itself, so its schedule is longer but the stakes are higher.
| Task | Interval |
|---|---|
| Check oil level, look for leaks | Daily during a long outage |
| Oil, oil filter, valve clearance | After the first 25 hours |
| Oil and oil filter (Schedule A) | Every two years or 200 hours |
| Air filter, spark plugs, valve clearance (Schedule B) | Every four years or 400 hours |
| Oil and filter in very cold or hot weather | Every year or 100 hours |
Generac's cold mark is below 40 °F (4.4 °C). The hot mark is above 85 °F (29.4 °C) when the unit runs nonstop. Generac also says to keep shrubs and tall grass 3 ft (0.91 m) away from the enclosure vents.
The unit tests itself on a timer you can set to weekly, every two weeks or monthly. Each exercise run lasts about five minutes. Generac recommends that an authorized dealer do the maintenance. For the emissions warranty, air filter and spark plug service must follow the schedule.
How to change the oil on a portable
- Drain it while the engine is warm, not hot. Honda says warm oil drains faster and more fully. Shut it off and let the muffler cool enough to work near it safely.
- Set it on a level surface. Remove the maintenance cover or drain plug per your manual.
- Drain into a pan. Tip the unit only as far as the manual shows.
- Refill to the mark. Use the oil grade your manual lists for your temperatures. Don't overfill.
- Check the level again after a short run.
Take old oil to a recycling drop-off. Don't pour it on the ground.
Storing a generator between uses
Honda says fuel can break down in as little as 30 days and leave gum that clogs the carburetor. Its storage table:
| Storage time | What to do |
|---|---|
| Less than 1 month | Nothing |
| 1 to 2 months | Fill with fresh gas and add fuel stabilizer |
| 2 months to 1 year | Fresh gas and stabilizer, then drain the carburetor float bowl |
| 1 year or more | Drain the tank and carburetor, change the oil and oil the cylinder |
Honda also says the air in a half-full tank speeds up fuel breakdown, and so does warm storage.
If that didn't work: signs it needs service now
- It won't start or shuts off soon after starting. Check the oil level first. Many portables have a low-oil shutoff. Champion's 3500W stops when the oil falls below its set level. See generator won't start.
- It runs rough or starts hard. Honda says old gas causes hard starting and leaves gum in the fuel system. Drain it and refill with fresh gas.
- Power drops under a load it used to handle. Clean the air filter and the spark arrestor. Then check that the load fits, using the generator wattage calculator or our power tool wattage chart.
- Oil looks milky or smells of gas. Stop using it and see a dealer.
The same filter, plug and spark-screen checks bring back power on other small engines too. See how to make a leaf blower more powerful.
When to call a pro
- Valve clearance, combustion chamber cleaning and fuel tank work. Honda and Champion both flag these for a dealer or a skilled owner with the right tools.
- Any standby generator work. Generac says to disconnect utility power and make the unit inoperable before working on it, because it can start on its own. Leave it to an authorized dealer.
- Transfer switch or wiring. That's a job for a licensed electrician.

What you'll need
- Engine oil of the grade in your manual: The grade depends on the temperature where you run it
- Oil drain pan and a funnel: An EU2200i holds just 14 oz
- Air filter and spark plug for your model: Part numbers are in the manual
- Spark plug socket and feeler gauge: To check the plug gap
- Fuel stabilizer: For storage longer than a month
- Hour meter: If your generator doesn't have one
Key takeaways
- Check the oil level before each use on every portable generator.
- The first oil change comes early: 5 hours on a Champion 3500, 20 hours on a Honda EU2200i, 20 to 30 hours on Generac portables.
- After break-in, most portables need oil every 100 hours or every 6 to 12 months, whichever comes first.
- A Generac 10 to 26 kW standby unit gets oil and filter every 200 hours or two years, and yearly in very hot or cold weather.
- Never service or refuel a hot or running generator, and never run one indoors.
Questions people ask
How often should a portable generator be serviced?
Check the oil before each use. Do the break-in oil change at the hour mark in your manual. Then change the oil about every 100 hours or every 6 to 12 months, clean the air filter every 50 to 200 hours depending on the model, and replace the spark plug about once a year.
Do I need to service a generator I rarely use?
Yes. The schedules run on months as well as hours, whichever comes first. Honda says gas can start to break down in as little as 30 days, so storage prep matters most on a generator that sits.
How often should a home standby generator be serviced?
Generac's 10 to 26 kW air-cooled units need oil and a filter after the first 25 hours, then every two years or 200 hours. In very cold or hot weather, it's every year or 100 hours. Generac recommends an authorized dealer do the work.
How often should I run my generator?
Generac standby units run a self-test on a timer you set to weekly, every two weeks or monthly. Each test lasts about five minutes. For a portable, follow the storage steps in its manual instead of guessing.
Can I use synthetic oil to stretch the interval?
No. Champion says synthetic oil may be used after break-in but does not extend the oil change interval.
