Can you use 2-stroke oil as chainsaw bar oil? What to use instead

By Robert D. Miller5 min read
Quick answer No. 2-stroke oil is made to mix into gas and burn in the engine. It isn't made to stick to a fast-moving chain. STIHL, Husqvarna and Echo all ask for a real chain oil, and all three say never to use waste oil. If you're out, stop and buy bar and chain oil.

Bar oil substitutes compared

Here's how the common "what I have in the garage" options stack up against what the saw makers ask for.

Oil Works as bar oil? Risk What the makers say
Bar and chain oil Yes Low The oil STIHL, Husqvarna, Echo and EGO all call for
Bio bar oil made for saws Yes Low if it's aging-resistant STIHL recommends its BioPlus
2-stroke engine oil No Chain and bar wear fast Made to mix into gas at 50:1, not for the oil tank
Clean motor oil Poor stand-in Slings off, more wear Not what any of these manuals ask for
Used or waste oil No Pump, bar and chain damage; skin cancer risk Ruled out by STIHL, Husqvarna and Echo
Kitchen vegetable oil No Can turn to resin and seize the pump STIHL's warning on bio oils that aren't aging-resistant

Why 2-stroke oil doesn't work as bar oil

The two oils do different jobs.

2-stroke oil lives in the fuel. On a gas saw, you mix it into the gasoline. Echo, STIHL and Husqvarna all list a 50:1 mix for their saws.

The oil coats the engine's insides, then burns with the fuel. Echo calls for an oil that meets ISO-L-EGD and JASO FD for this job.

Bar oil lives on the chain. The chain runs at high speed around the bar, so oil that isn't sticky gets thrown off.

Oregon sells its bar oil as "extra high tackiness" to stop throw-off. Husqvarna says to use a chain oil with good adherence to the saw chain.

Put 2-stroke oil in the oil tank and the chain gets less oil where it needs it. STIHL says the life of the chain and bar depends on the lubricant, and it asks for a "specially formulated chain lubricant." Husqvarna warns that the chain can break if lubrication isn't enough.

There's one more catch on some Husqvarna saws. They are built so the fuel runs out before the chain oil. Husqvarna says oil that's too thin runs out first, which breaks that safety margin.

What to use instead

Bar and chain oil (the right answer)

Use the saw maker's oil or a standard bar and chain oil. That's what Husqvarna's manual says when its own oil isn't on hand.

Check the grade for the season. Echo lists bar oil grades of SAE 30 for summer, and SAE 10 for winter or for sappy, resinous trees. Husqvarna warns that some chain oils get too thick below 32°F (0°C) and can damage the oil pump.

Bio bar oil

If you want a plant-based oil, buy one made for chainsaws. STIHL recommends its rapidly biodegradable BioPlus. It also warns that bio oil must resist aging. If it doesn't, it turns to resin, leaves hard deposits and can even seize the oil pump.

If you're out of bar oil

Stop cutting and buy some. OSHA's chainsaw QuickCard says to make sure the oil tank is full before you start. STIHL says never to run the saw without chain oil, because a dry chain can damage the bar and chain very quickly.

Never top up with used motor oil. STIHL warns that repeated contact with waste oil can cause skin cancer, and that it lacks the lubricating properties a chain needs. Husqvarna adds that waste oil damages the oil pump, bar and chain. Echo says not to use used or reclaimed oil.

Planned bench test: the same saw at full throttle for 10 seconds with each oil, the bar nose 12 inches from a sheet of cardboard, to compare oil fling. Results will be added here when the test is done.

What oil goes where on a Ryobi, EGO or other saw

Saw type Fuel tank Oil tank
Gas saw (STIHL, Husqvarna, Echo, Ryobi gas) Gas mixed with 2-stroke oil at the manual's ratio Bar and chain oil
Battery saw (Ryobi, EGO and others) None Bar and chain oil
Corded electric saw None Bar and chain oil

Ryobi gas saws run on a 2-cycle gas and oil mix, with bar oil in a separate tank. Use the ratio printed in your manual. Ryobi battery saws take bar and chain oil only. More Ryobi guides are on our Ryobi brand page, and our take on the brand is in is Ryobi a good brand.

EGO battery saws also use bar and chain oil only. EGO's CS1200 manual says to fill the oil tank before the first use, and lists a 5.0 oz (150 ml) tank. More EGO help is on our EGO brand page.

To mix fuel for a gas saw, use the 2-stroke mix chart or the 2-stroke fuel mix calculator. Husqvarna's own table shows 0.10 liter of oil for 5 liters of gas at 50:1.

If you already used the wrong oil

  • 2-stroke oil in the oil tank. Stop. Empty the tank, wipe the cap area clean, and refill with bar oil. Run the saw and check that the chain throws a fine line of oil.
  • Bar oil in the fuel tank. Don't start the saw. Husqvarna's manual says to drain the fuel tank if you haven't tried to start it. If you have, it says to see a servicing dealer.
  • Used motor oil in the oil tank. Drain it and refill with bar oil. Wash any oil off your skin.

How to check the chain is getting oil

  1. Start the saw on the ground with the chain brake on, as OSHA's QuickCard says.
  2. Point the bar tip at a light-colored surface, such as cardboard or a stump, a short way off.
  3. Run it at speed for a few seconds. STIHL says the chain should always throw off a small amount of oil.

No oil line? See chainsaw not oiling the bar before you cut.

Safety

Safety: Shut off the engine and let it cool before you open the fuel or oil tank. Move the saw at least 10 feet (3 m) from where you fueled before you start it, as OSHA and Echo both say. Wear the gear OSHA lists for chainsaw work: hand, foot, leg, eye, face, hearing and head protection. A dry chain can break, so never cut without bar oil.

STIHL also says to refill the oil every time you refuel. When the fuel runs out, a little oil should still be in the tank. If the oil level doesn't go down, the oiler may be blocked.

Oil is one part of a saw that cuts well. Wet weather changes how you work, so read can you use a chainsaw in the rain before a storm cleanup. A dull chain works the oiler harder, and how to sharpen a chainsaw covers files and angles.

Buying a new chain? Match pitch and gauge with the chainsaw chain size guide. For high limbs, a hydraulic limb saw runs its chain off a truck or tractor's hydraulics instead of an engine.

What you'll need

  • Bar and chain oil: The maker's own, or a standard chain oil; a winter grade below freezing
  • Two-stroke engine oil: Gas saws only, for the fuel mix, never for the oil tank
  • A marked fuel can: Echo says to label it as 2-stroke mix
  • Clean rag and funnel: Wipe the cap area before you open it so dirt stays out
  • Gloves: Keep oil off your skin

Key takeaways

  • 2-stroke oil goes in the fuel, mixed with gas at the ratio in your manual. Bar and chain oil goes in the oil tank. They are not swaps.
  • Bar oil is made to be tacky so it stays on the chain. Oregon and STIHL both sell theirs on that point.
  • Never use used motor oil. STIHL says it lacks the right lubricating properties and that repeated skin contact can cause skin cancer.
  • Match the oil to the weather. Echo lists SAE 30 grade bar oil for summer and SAE 10 for winter or sappy wood.
  • Battery saws, Ryobi and EGO included, use bar and chain oil only. There is no fuel mix at all.

Questions people ask

What oil do I use in a Ryobi chainsaw?

On a Ryobi battery saw, only bar and chain oil, in the oil tank. On a Ryobi gas saw, 2-cycle oil goes into the gas at the ratio in your manual, and bar and chain oil goes in the separate oil tank. Don't swap the two.

Can I use motor oil as bar oil?

It's a poor stand-in. Motor oil has no tackifier, so it slings off the chain faster. Never use used motor oil: STIHL, Husqvarna and Echo all rule it out. Buy bar and chain oil before you cut.

Can I use vegetable oil as bar oil?

Not kitchen oil. STIHL warns that bio chain oil must resist aging, or it turns to resin, leaves hard deposits and can seize the oil pump. Buy a bio bar oil made for saws, like STIHL BioPlus.

I put bar oil in the gas tank. What now?

Don't start the saw. Husqvarna's manual says to drain the fuel tank if you haven't tried to start it, and to see a dealer if you have. Then refill with the right fuel mix.

How often do I refill bar oil?

Every time you refuel. STIHL says there should still be a little oil left in the tank when the fuel runs out. If the oil level doesn't drop, check the oiler.
