The verdict by lawn
| Your lawn | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tidy lawn you mow weekly, beds and drives close by | Rear discharge (or rear bag) | Clippings land behind you, not on paths |
| Tall, coarse or rarely cut grass | Side discharge | The classic pick for rough grass |
| You want a clean, striped look | Rear bag | Collects most clippings |
| You want to feed the lawn | Mulch (plug the rear opening) | Fine clippings stay on the lawn |
| Big acreage with a tractor | Rear discharge grooming deck | Made to mount on a tractor, like the John Deere GM20 |

What is a rear discharge mower?
A rear discharge mower sends cut grass out an opening at the back of the deck. A side discharge mower throws it out a chute on the right or left side.
There are two kinds on the market:
- Rear-bag walk-behinds. The rear opening feeds a bag. To mulch, you lock a plug into it. Toro's 22291 Heavy-Duty Recycler works this way. Its manual says never engage the blade without the plug or the bag in place.
- True rear discharge. You take the bag off and the clippings drop out the back through a hinged guard. Honda's HRX217 manual says to remove the bag and set the Clip Director knob in the BAG range to discharge out the back.
On the tractor side, John Deere sells its GM20 series as rear discharge grooming mowers that hang off the back of a tractor.
Rear vs side vs bag vs mulch
| Rear discharge | Side discharge | Rear bag | Mulch | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Where clippings go | Behind the deck, in the cut strip | Out the side chute | Into the bag | Recut and dropped back on the lawn |
| Best grass | Taller, rougher grass (Husqvarna) | Taller, coarse, rarely cut grass (Husqvarna) | Any, for a clean look | Short grass you mow often (Husqvarna) |
| Cleanup | Little on paths | Clippings can spray onto drives and walks (Troy-Bilt) | Empty the bag, maybe more than once (Troy-Bilt) | None |
| What must be fitted | Rear guard down, per the manual | Side chute locked in place | Bag locked on | Plug or mulch kit in place |
| Mowing next to a bed | Deck is the same on both sides | Chute side throws toward the bed | Same as rear | Same as rear |
Pros of a rear discharge mower
- Clippings stay off your paths. Troy-Bilt says side discharge can spray clippings onto your driveway and sidewalk, mostly in longer grass. A rear opening drops them in the strip you just cut.
- No chute sticking out. The deck is the same width on both sides, so you can work along a fence or bed from either direction.
- One opening, three jobs. Many rear models bag, mulch with the plug in, or (on some models) discharge out the back. Honda's HRX calls this a 4-in-1 system with mulch, bag, discharge and leaf shred.
- Handles taller grass than mulching. Husqvarna lists rear and side discharge as ideal for taller, wilder grass and lawns you cut less often.
- No bag to empty. You skip the stops that Troy-Bilt warns can add time to a bagging mow.
Cons of a rear discharge mower
- Fewer true rear discharge models. On many walk-behinds the rear opening is for the bag only. Toro says those mowers need the plug or the bag fitted before the blade runs.
- Clippings can trail in rows. Wet or very long grass may leave lines of clippings behind the deck. Rake them or mow again on a dry day.
- The guard has to be in good shape. Honda's manual says to check the rear shield for cracks or tears and have a worn one replaced by a dealer.
- Thrown objects come out the back. That's toward your feet and legs. Toro warns that running without the plug lets objects fly toward you or bystanders.
- Edges still need a trimmer. Neither deck style cuts right up to a wall. Finish with a string trimmer. If yours is a DeWalt, see how to install DeWalt trimmer line.
Rear discharge vs side discharge: which should you buy?
Get a rear discharge (or rear-bag) mower if:
- You mow at least weekly and the grass stays fairly short.
- You have beds, gravel or a drive close to where you mow.
- You want to bag some weeks and mulch others with one mower.
Get a side discharge mower if:
- You mow tall, coarse grass or a rough back lot.
- You cut less often and don't mind blowing the drive clean.
- You want to mulch some weeks too. Read can you use mulching blades with side discharge before you swap blades.

How to use rear discharge safely
- Read the mode rules. Toro's 22177TE manual lists the only safe setups: plug locked in, bag locked on, side chute locked on or the tunnel door locked shut. Never run with the opening bare.
- Clear the lawn. CPSC says to pick up stones and toys before you start. A rear opening throws them back toward you.
- Keep children off the lawn. CPSC says to keep children off the lawn while you mow, and never to let them ride on mowers as passengers.
- Check the bag and guard. Toro warns that a worn bag can let small stones fly out. Honda says to replace a cracked or torn rear shield.
- Don't mow in reverse unless you have to. CPSC says that if you do, look behind you for children first.
- Dress for it. CPSC advises sturdy shoes, long pants and close-fitting clothes, plus eye or hearing protection.
CPSC reports that from 2014 to 2016, an average of 36,000 people a year were treated in emergency rooms for riding mower injuries.
Cleaning up after a rear discharge mow
A few clippings will still land on paths at the edges. A blower with a round nozzle works best on loose clippings, as covered in leaf blower flat vs round nozzle. If your blower feels weak, see how to make a leaf blower more powerful.
Blade shape matters too. See mower blade types.
Example mowers
We haven't tested these yet. They are examples from the makers' own documents:
- Honda HRX217. Rear discharge with the bag off, plus bag, mulch and leaf shred through the Clip Director knob.
- Toro 22291 Heavy-Duty Recycler/Rear Bagger. Rear bag or mulch with the rear-discharge plug. No bare rear discharge.
- John Deere GM20 series. Rear discharge grooming mowers for tractors.
What you'll need
- The mower's rear plug, bag or rear guard: Whichever the manual calls for
- Sturdy shoes, long pants, eye and hearing protection: CPSC's dress advice
- String trimmer: For edges the deck can't reach
- Leaf blower or broom: For stray clippings on paths
Key takeaways
- A rear discharge mower sends clippings out the back of the deck, into the strip you just cut.
- On many walk-behinds, the rear opening is for the bag. Toro says never engage the blade without the rear plug or the bag in place.
- Honda's HRX lets you take the bag off and discharge out the back through a rear guard.
- Side discharge can spray clippings onto drives and walks, per Troy-Bilt. Rear discharge keeps them behind you.
- Pick up stones and toys first and keep children off the lawn, per CPSC.
Questions people ask
What is a rear discharge mower?
It's a mower that sends grass clippings out an opening at the back of the deck instead of a chute on the side. On many walk-behinds the same opening feeds the rear bag. Some, like Honda's HRX, can discharge out the back with the bag off.
Is rear discharge better than side discharge?
It's better for keeping clippings off beds, drives and walks, and the deck has no chute sticking out to one side. Side discharge is the classic pick for tall, coarse grass. Husqvarna rates both for taller, wilder grass and lawns you don't cut often.
Can I run my rear-bag mower without the bag?
Only if the manual allows it. Toro's Recycler manuals say never engage the blade without the rear-discharge plug or the grass bag installed, because objects can be thrown toward you.
Can a rear discharge mower mulch?
Many can. On Toro's Recycler mowers you lock the rear-discharge plug in place to recycle clippings. Honda's Clip Director knob moves from bagging toward mulching.
Who makes rear discharge mowers?
Walk-behind models with rear bagging or rear discharge come from makers such as Toro and Honda. For tractors, John Deere sells rear discharge grooming mowers. Check each model's manual for which modes it supports.
