How to install DeWalt trimmer line (QuickLoad head, step by step)

By Robert D. Miller5 min read
Quick answer Remove the battery first. Cut a length of DeWalt 0.080-inch (2.0 mm) line, up to the length your manual allows. Line the spool eyelets up with the arrow on the cap and push the line straight through until both ends are even. Hold the spool and twist the cap to wind it on, leaving about 5 inches per side.

This guide is part of our outdoor power hub, in the blowers and trimmers section. The steps come from DeWalt's DCST922 manual. Other DeWalt trimmers with a QuickLoad head load the same way. Check your manual if your head looks different.

Most likely problems when you reload DeWalt line

What you see Likely cause The fix
Line won't push through the head Eyelets not lined up with the arrow on the cap Turn the cap until the eyelets and the arrow line up
Only one side comes out Line didn't pass through the second eyelet Pull it back and guide it straight across the hub
Line won't wind on Spool cap is turning with the grip cover Hold the spool cap still with one hand while you twist
Line won't feed when you bump Loose or crossed winding, or line too short Unwind and reload evenly; leave enough line out
Line keeps snapping Old, dry line, or hitting fences and walls Fresh line; trim away from hard edges
Line too long and slowing the motor Line past the 14-inch swath Let the guard's cutter trim it, or cut it back

Before you start: pull the battery

Safety: Turn the trimmer off and remove the battery pack before you touch the head. DeWalt's manual says to do this every time you replace line, because an accidental start can cause injury. Wear gloves: the line cutter on the guard is sharp.

Press the battery release button and slide the pack out. Set the trimmer on a bench or the ground with the head facing up.

How to load a DeWalt QuickLoad head

This is the reload method from the DCST922 manual. You don't need to take the head apart. DeWalt's QuickLoad head page says you just twist the cap to load the line.

1. Cut the line

Use the line size your manual names. The DCST922 takes 2.0 mm (0.080 in) line, and DeWalt says not to use other sizes. Its replacement line is model DWO1DT801 or DWO1DT802.

Cut a maximum of 6 m (about 20 ft) for the DCST922. DeWalt's support article for QuickLoad heads allows up to 25 ft, so check your own manual. Make the cut square so the end pushes through cleanly.

2. Line up the eyelets

Turn the spool housing until its two eyelets line up with the arrow on the spool grip cover. You should be able to see straight through the head.

3. Feed the line through

Push one end of the line into one eyelet. Guide it across and out of the eyelet on the other side. Keep pulling until the line sticks out the same length on both sides.

4. Wind it on

Hold the spool cap still with one hand. With the other hand, turn the spool grip cover counterclockwise. The line winds onto the spool from both sides at once.

Keep winding until about 130 mm (about 5 in) is left on each side. Then put the battery back in.

Feeding line while you trim

DeWalt trimmers use bump feed. Run the trimmer at normal speed and tap the head gently on the ground. More line comes out.

Line wears faster along sidewalks and in heavy weeds. The DCST922 manual says line past the 350 mm (14 in) swath hurts performance and runtime and can damage the motor. The cutter on the guard trims it back for you. DeWalt suggests touching up that cutter with a file now and then, because it dulls.

Replacing the whole spool head

If the head is cracked or the spool won't turn, replace it. Don't run the trimmer with a broken hub or spool, DeWalt warns. Here's the DCST922 method:

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Turn the spool housing until the hole in the spindle plate lines up with the notch in the motor housing.
  3. Put a screwdriver through the notch and into the hole to lock the spindle.
  4. Turn the spool grip cover clockwise to unscrew the head. Don't turn the spool housing itself.
  5. Clean dirt and grass off the spindle plate and motor housing.
  6. Fit the spindle plate, lock the spindle with the screwdriver again, and thread the new head on counterclockwise. Tighten it firmly.

DeWalt's DWO1DT995 QuickLoad replacement head comes pre-wound with 0.080-in line. DeWalt says it also accepts its 0.095-in line.

If that didn't work

  • Line still won't feed. Pull the battery and unwind the spool. Look for line that's crossed or melted together, then reload it neatly. See trimmer line won't feed for more causes.
  • Line breaks every few minutes. Old line dries out. DeWalt suggests storing spare line in a sealed plastic bag with a tablespoon of water. Also cut with the tip of the line, not by pushing the head into thick growth.
  • The head wobbles. The head isn't tight on the spindle, or the spindle plate is missing. Refit it as above.
  • Wrong line size. Swap it for the size in your manual. Our trimmer line size chart covers common sizes by brand.

When to call a pro

Take the trimmer to a DeWalt service center if the spindle is bent, the motor smells hot, or the guard is cracked. DeWalt says repairs should go to a factory or authorized service center. If the trimmer hit a hidden object, stop and check it for damage before you go on, as the manual says.

Trim safely once it's loaded

Safety: Wear ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses, hearing protection, long heavy pants and sturdy shoes. Keep people and pets at least 100 feet (30 m) away, as DeWalt's manual says. Keep the guard on. Keep the line close to level, tilted no more than 30 degrees: DeWalt says this trimmer is not an edger.

DeWalt also says not to use the trimmer in wet conditions. If it gets wet, let it dry for at least 48 hours before you use it. That rule matches what other makers say about battery tools in the rain. See can you use a chainsaw in the rain for the full picture.

After trimming, a blower clears the clippings. Our guide to flat vs round leaf blower nozzles shows which one moves wet clippings, and leaf blower CFM vs MPH explains the specs. More DeWalt help is on our DeWalt brand page.

The DCST922 has a brushless motor, and brushed vs brushless tools explains what that changes.

What you'll need

  • DeWalt trimmer line in the size your manual names: DCST922: 2.0 mm (0.080 in), DeWalt DWO1DT801 or DWO1DT802
  • Utility knife or snips: For a clean, square cut on the line end
  • Gloves: The guard's line cutter is sharp
  • Flat screwdriver: Only if you're replacing the whole spool head
  • Safety glasses: DeWalt asks for ANSI Z87.1 eye protection when you trim

Key takeaways

  • Pull the battery before you touch the head. DeWalt's manual says to every time you replace line.
  • Use the size your manual names. The DCST922 takes 2.0 mm (0.080 in) line; DeWalt's QuickLoad head also accepts its 0.095-in line.
  • On the DCST922, cut no more than 6 m (about 20 ft) of line and stop winding with 130 mm (about 5 in) left on each side.
  • Line feeds by bumping the head on the ground at normal speed. Line past the 14-inch swath strains the motor.
  • Old, dry line snaps. DeWalt suggests storing spare line in a sealed bag with a tablespoon of water.

Questions people ask

What size line does a DeWalt trimmer use?

Check your model's manual. The 20V DCST922 uses 2.0 mm (0.080 in) line and DeWalt says not to use other sizes. DeWalt's QuickLoad replacement head comes with 0.080-in line and also accepts DeWalt 0.095-in line.

How much line do I put on a DeWalt spool?

The DCST922 manual says to cut a maximum of 6 m (about 20 ft). DeWalt's support article for QuickLoad heads says up to 25 ft. Go with the figure in your own manual.

Can I use another brand of line in a DeWalt trimmer?

DeWalt says to use only its own spools and line. It warns that other line can reduce performance, damage the trimmer or cause injury. If you do try another brand, match the diameter exactly.

Why won't my DeWalt trimmer line feed?

The line may be wound loose or crossed, welded together from heat, or too short to reach past the eyelets. Pull the battery, unwind it, and reload it evenly. Bump the head on the ground while it runs at normal speed.

Which way do I turn the DeWalt spool cap to wind line?

On the DCST922, hold the spool still and turn the spool grip cover counterclockwise. Follow the arrow on your head if it differs.
